The Butler House is a Craftsman-style Foursquare residence built circa 1910 for the sales manager of the Carborundum Company, George W. Chormann (The Chormann House). The house was designed by Chester R. Phelps (1872-1965), an architect responsible for many buildings in Niagara Falls and Lockport. His most notable surviving building is the Neo-Classical Niagara Falls Gazette building located at 310 Niagara Street.
As a custom build, this Foursquare is unique in being larger than most with 25-foot sides, the main entrance a full-height side bay, as well as an open, full-width front porch with no street access. More special is having the living and family rooms joined as one large parlor room in the front of the house, which mirrors the front porch, creating a very open floor plan and a much different feel than a typical Foursquare.
The house was converted to a Bed & Breakfast in 2004 by the Yoder family who added three bathrooms on the 2nd floor, as well as modified the 3rd floor as living quarters. During the pandemic we had the opportunity to renovate the property over a two-year period. Our goal was to highlight the craftsmanship and charm of the house with more modern decor and amenities. Since reopening we have been blessed to host over 750 couples or families visiting the area, been recognized with multiple industry awards, as well as selected by the TV show CBS The Price Is Right to host Niagara Falls vacation packages!
